What sets WSI apart from other LiDAR companies is our ground survey component. We are able to provide survey and engineering grade LiDAR data because we own and operate ground survey equipment during each and every LiDAR flight. Ground level survey data allows us to calibrate the LiDAR to within centimeters accuracy. We deploy some of the most advanced GPS and survey equipment available capable of gathering highly accurate spatial data for use in aerial target surveys, creating feature boundaries, surveying river depths or measuring feature heights. Simultaneous to the airborne data collection missions, our team collects static (1 Hz recording frequency) positional data across a network of dual-frequency DGPS base stations. Time-indexed GPS data are used to correct the continuous onboard measurements of aircraft position recorded throughout the mission.

For transmission line projects requiring line-rating analysis, WSI deploys multiple weather stations along the planned route that collect highly accurate weather data capable of collecting temperature, barometric pressure, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, solar radiation and rainfall. Our team deploys four (4) Pegasus-EX portable weather stations, collecting data at one-minute intervals. The weather stations are monitored continuously throughout the acquisition to ensure full data capture.

Ground-based LiDAR is applied to intensive study plot areas because of its relatively high point density and limited range. These data are a valuable compliment to airborne data because they can inform surveys in areas where the airborne laser cannot penetrate (i.e. in dense forest canopy, building shadows, or cliff banks). Additionally, ground-based LiDAR systems can co-acquire true-color digital photos which are directly geo-referenced to the LiDAR returns to produce a highly detailed 3D representation of the surveyed area. The resulting models have many applications including quantifying vegetation structure, rapid terrain damage assessment, building and road measurements and many more.
